    Apostasy and Restoration

Part Two: Reformation Inadequacies As I address this topic, please understand that I do not mean to attack any specific church or religion. If I mention the history of a particular church, it is to provide an example of general principles. Many good things have come from those churches, even though I disagree with the principles from which they started or developed.

Recognizing the signs of apostasy, well meaning and inspired men tried to bring Christianity back to its original purity. Their efforts, though significant, were ultimately not enough to solve the complete apostasy. Where did Protestantism fail? In what way was Protestantism not enough?

One way Protestantism failed to correct the problem was in its inability to provide direct, divine authority. Of all the Christian reformers, Martin Luther is the most well known. He was a great man who recognized serious faults in the Church he loved. His aim was not to start a new church; it was to fix the Catholic Church from the inside out. When that didn’t happen, a group of Catholic German Priests who didn’t want to pay Rome anymore approached the reluctant Martin Luther. These priests used Luther’s complaints to justify splitting off from the Roman Church so that they wouldn’t have to pay their tributes to Rome. They became the Lutherans. A new Church was formed, but not with any new manifestation of God. It was formed out of the political, economic, and social drives of the world. This seems to be the consistent thread through the reformation.

Take, for example, the Anglicans, or the Episcopalians. How were they started? King Henry VIII of England wanted a divorce that the Pope wouldn’t grant. With much bloodshed, he started his own church in England. There were no visions or revelations, nor even doctrinal differences, just politics.

The pattern goes on and on. Each of the Protestant movements was started not by direct revelation or the voice of God, but by politically and economically motivated man. The word "Protestant" itself reflects the disgruntled apostate Catholics who started the movements. Yes, there were pure people who sincerely wanted to purify doctrine, but those people became the pawns of governments and corruption. Their efforts were crucial to the restoration and benefited billions of people, but they alone did not end the general apostasy.

Another indication that the apostasy of the original Church of Jesus Christ did not end with the reformation is the fact that apostate creeds were not discontinued by the reformed Churches. Treatises like the Nicene Creed that defined the substance and essence of God differently than taught by Christ and the Apostles were still used by the Protestant Churches. These creeds were established by the Christian Church hundreds of years after the apostasy had started.

Furthermore, practices that had been lost in the apostasy were not restored through the Reformation. For example, in the original Christian Church there were Apostles that were called. In addition to the first twelve, Matthias, Paul, and others were ordained Apostles. The practice of ordaining Apostles stopped during the first century and was not reconstituted during the Protestant Movement. In fact, none of the leaders in the movement can trace authority to the Apostles by the laying on of hands. The Apostolic line of authority was broken.

These indications of a continued apostasy demonstrate how the Reformation was not the solution to the apostasy. The Movement was instead the offspring of political, social, and economic contentions. The fruit of all of this contention during the Reformation became the American "extraordinary scene of religious feeling" (JSH 1:6) described by the young Joseph Smith. It was in this "war of words and tumult of opinions" (JSH 1:10) that the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ was able to happen, beginning with a manifestation of God. Understanding the inadequacies of the Protestant Reformation makes the clarity of the Restoration so much more magnificent. The Restoration of Christ’s Church in 1830 solved in every way the general Christian Apostasy.

"And for this cause, that men might be made partakers of the glories which were to be revealed, the Lord sent forth the fullness of his gospel, his everlasting covenant, reasoning in plainness and simplicity—. . . And by the weak things of the earth the Lord shall thrash the nations by the power of his Spirit" (D&C 133:57, 59).

  • From a letter dated April 17, 2006 Taken from an e-mail dating April 17, 2006:

Jori Widen I need your address. I have sent you a letter twice, but it has come back to me because of a faulty address. "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." (2 Peter 1:3-4).

"Peter penned the most sublime language of any of the apostles" – Joseph Smith (HC 5:392).

Dear family and friends, I know I promised that this week I would post "Apostasy and Restoration: Part Two," however, I would like to interrupt the series and post part two next week (or rather have my dad post it for me as I don’t actually do the posting).

Happy Easter! I love Easter. I was glad that I was able to keep up with family traditions even in far away California. On Saturday night Elders Mancuso, Norberg, Murdock, and I dyed Easter eggs. Elder Norby made an "emo" egg for me- My nick name in this pad is "Elder Emo." I love this pad- these Elders are the best. I love living here.

We had a nice service Easter morning with several investigators. Then after Church I made my grandma’s "popovers" (Yorkshire pudding). They turned out perfect. Everyone loved them. We went to the Roylance’s for dinner, where the kids hid Easter eggs for us to find. It was fun.

Of course the reason I love Easter so much is because it signifies the most sacred even of all time: the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In honor of that most sacred and ultimate sacrifice, spend some time this week reading Mosiah chapter 3 in the Book of Mormon. It is one of the most beautiful chapters on the depth of what Easter truly honors.

One more thought on Easter. I know that I have talked a lot about this before, but think about what it means to be alive, and what it means to be dead. I testify that Jesus Christ, the Creator of the World and Savior, is alive. He lives. That is the message of the season, and of this Church- that He lives. Though the world may define deity in infinitely dead terms, I add my witness to the disciples of the old world and new that He is risen. For they saw Him. They touched Him. They spoke with Him. And I have come to know of the truth of their experiences recorded in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. And so to the living God I give my praise.

On a different note, I want to share something that touched me about the first apostles. I had been studying Paul, and I have gained a deeper love for his ministry and writings. But the other day I read the epistles of Peter. Peter is my hero. I love what he had to say about Paul’s words. He said that the writings of Paul would be misunderstood. That prophesy has come true. I have met so many people out here who abuse Paul’s writings and misconstrue the gospel he taught. I hope we can all be careful as we prayerfully and intelligently study the sacred texts of the New Testament which have been miraculously preserved for our benefit. Until next week, take care,

    Elder Emo

And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen." (2 Peter 3:15-18).

  • From a Letter Dated April 10, 2006

taken from a study journal entry from March 21, 2006: "For there are many yet on earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men . . . and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it . . ."

Apostasy and Restoration I become more and more convinced of the apostasy and therefore need for the restoration the more I study the Bible and world history. There was a void in the Christian Church, in the world really, that needed to be filled. The doctrines, practices, and organization established by Jesus Christ had been corrupted. I am so grateful that Jesus Christ's church was restored in full, beginning with a young boy in 1820. Over the next three weeks I would like to briefly show how there was a general, universal apostasy, why the Protestant reformation was not enough to end it, and why it was not resolved with a restoration until the mid 1800's. Part One: General Apostasy There was a general falling away from the pure teachings, organization, and authority of the original Christian Church. Apostate doctrines and practices were the main concerns of the apostles. We can attribute most of the New Testament to those concerns. The Apostles wrote to various branches of the church to correct false doctrines and practices. They were aware of the impending general apostasy.

For example, in 2 Timothy 1:13-15* Paul writes that the entire church in Asia had gone apostate. "All they which are in Asia be turned away from me . . ." Peter spoke of existing and future "false teachers" in 2 Peter 2:1-2 and 3:17. To the church in Corinth Paul wrote of "divisions" and "heresies" among them (1 Corinthians 11:18-19). In fact, 1 Corinthians was written because a church leader had been involved in a sexual offense and, among other things, Paul wanted him excommunicated (2 Corinthians 2:5-11). The list of situations requiring apostolic reproof goes on. (see also 1 John 2:18-19; 4:1-3; 5:21, 2 John 1:7-9, 3 John 1:9-10, Jude 1:3-4, Revelation 2:2, Colossians 2:8; 20-22, John 6:66, Galatians 1:6-7; 3:1, 1 Timothy 1:3-6; 4:1, 2 Timothy 2:17-18, Titus 1:10-16, James 4:1) It is shocking that those early Christians were "so soon removed from him that called [them] into the grace of Christ" (Gal. 1:6), but clearly the Church of Christ was being perverted, and the Apostles knew it.

There is one specific false, or unauthorized, teacher worthy of note. Bishop Linus. Bishop Linus was ordained and set apart to be the authorized leader of Rome by Peter, however, within a year the Church under his direction had gone astray and was returning to elaborate laws and rituals that the Apostles taught were no longer needed. Bishop Linus was then removed from power by the Apostle Paul. Paul set in his stead a different leader, coincidently named Deacon Linus. Deacon Linus was then the authorized Church leader in Rome, but sadly, Deacon Lunus was killed by Emperor Nero. When that happened, Bishop Linus, who had continued his preaching, reestablished himself as the head of the Church in Rome without the Apostle's direction. Thus, apostasy began in Rome. A majority of the Christian world, however, traces its authority to Bishop Linus.

One indication of general apostasy is specific direction or doctrine that the Apostles gave that was broken by the Christians over the ages. These doctrines include the mode and manner of baptism (Romans 6:3-5, Colossians 2:12), the nature of God, the honor and importance of marriage (Hebrews 13:4, 1 Timothy 4:1-3), etc. Changes in these doctrines indicate a "falling away" (2 Thes. 2:3) from original Christianity. Furthermore, the Apostles gave the saints counsel and direction that was ultimately ignored. For example, Paul commanded the saints to have no schisms (1 Cor. 12:25) and no confusion (1 Cor. 14:33). He told them not to use the "philosophy of man" (Col. 2:8) and to "keep from idols" (1 John 5:21). Despite all this there have been several schisms in the Church, there is much confusion, worldly philosophies (like the Egyptian concept of a triune god) crept into Church creeds, and iconography and what became the canonization of saints soon turned into Dark Age idolatry.

If such early signs of apostasy are not clear enough, look to the latter indications of a falling away from pure Christianity. There are the crusades, the inquisition, people who were burned for trying to make sacred scripture available. There were the indulgences- salvation sold for money. There were conquered peoples, and the springing forth of the confusing multitude of churches that still exist today. Clearly these examples of corruption reveal the loss of true Christianity as was prophesied. Without continuing correction from Apostles, the apostasy became complete. The world was thirsty for a restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. *Scripture references can be found at www.scriptures.lds.org

". . . These should then be attended to with great earnestness . . . Therefore . . . let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed." (D&C 123:12, 14, & 17).

  • From a letter dated April 3, 2006

    Greetings from Arcadia!

I have been transferred to the Temple City ward where I will only be serving part time as a proseltyzing missionary. I am the new Office Elder in the mission office. Pretty much during the office hours I will be here in Arcadia doing office work, coordinating transportation, helping with Zone Conferences, and other mission work.  After office hours and on weekends I'll be doing normal missionary things in Temple City. I am way stoked.

It is so hard to leave Sunland. I loved the ward members and investigators. I became very attatched to the people. I would love to share specific ways in which people said goodbye, but it's probably not xanga appropriate, and it will make me sad to recount their sincere statements and gifts. It was so nice to know, though, that the people in that area appreciated my service there.

Now that I am in the office, I will see a different side to the mission. It is exciting. I will probably be here for a good 6 months. There is a lot of training I have to go through just to learn about where things are and how to work out all the paperwork and things, but I am not worried about learning. It is neat- I will be seeing the political side of the mission from a third party observing perspective. Elders and Sisters have already placed bribes (I will remain silent as to whether or not I accepted them) for various favors. Office Elders get to know mission annoucements sooner than most. We see the mail first. We know transfers sooner. We know where things are- get things like Mission Rosters. People tell us their problems for some reason even though they don't need to.   Basically we see and hear everything, and everybody wants favors from us because of it.

I am very excited to get to learn the areas of the mission and to get to see and know all of the missionaries. This is going to be a great opportunity for me.

Speaking of opportunities, I hope that you took the opportunity to enjoy General Conference this past weekend. Elder Eyring and Elder Holland gave remarkable talks. Go to LDS.ORG right now and listen to, read, watch Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's talk in the Sunday Morning session. It is powerful. I always feel like Elder Holland writes his speeches as letters directly to me (of course his October 2005 address to young women being a dissapointing exception).

Well, I better get going. Office life is very busy compared to Sunland. Take care,

    Elder Embree

  • Dear family, friends, and xangans,

Excuse the lack of recent updates. I have instead tried to focus on sending letters to individuals. I wrote 14 letters yesterday, and have 9 more that I plan to write. (and no I did not receive 23 letters in the mail last week). Included in the letters are pictures of the snow we received here on Saturday. Yes, that's right, it snowed in Los Angeles. We were all pretty stoked.

I do have tons of things I would like to post about. I want to write about the reality of the Apostasy, the inadequacy of the Protestant Reformation, and the beauty of the Restoration. I have written these things in my study journal, but lack the time on the computer to type them up for your benefit. Sorry. If there a specific things you'd like to hear from me about, you will have to write. (I have much longer available writing time than typing time).

    Thanks and Take Care,

    Elder Embree

  • Dear Family/Xangans,

Another transfer- this is my 5th. Of course that means that last week I celebrated my 6th month mark with the ritual tie burning. We also celebrated it with real Chicago pizza.

Yesterday I got a new companion. His name is Elder Roberts, he's from American Fork. It is hard for me because I was really good friends with Elder Whittier who I was with for 12 weeks- probably the fastest 12 weeks of my mission. I am still in Sunland, which is a great area right now for this work.

Sorry this update is so mundane. There were some very spiritual things that happened last week, but I don't feel it necessary to post them here at this time. Just know that my faith in this work has been renued as I have watched it bring someone happiness. One of our investigators is just changing so much- it is a remarkable testament of the power of Jesus Christ manefest through the Book of Mormon, which she has now read twice in the 5 weeks we have taught her.

Thursday-Sunday Elder Whittier and I were somewhat housebound because of an injury he sustained. How he got the injury is an extremely funny story, but must be told to individuals (so it can be censored as appropriate). So, if you want a really big laugh and great story, you will have to write me and request the details:

California Arcadia Mission 170 W. Duarte Rd. Arcadia, CA 91007

Thanks. I look forward to hearing from all of you,

    Elder Embree

  • Dear Family, Friends, and Xangans,

All is well in Sunland. Yesterday was a particularly great day. A couple that is now in their 4th week free from smoking came to Church for the first time in probably years. It looks like they will be coming back for good. Seeing them in Church put me on cloud nine.

Our investigator continues to progress towards baptism. Though she has not made that decision yet, I can see how our lessons and how Church changes her life. She comes from a world of discord, chaos, and darkness. When she comes to Church or to lessons, I can see it in her. I watch her through the lessons and through the meetings though, and I see that darkness leave her. She is finding the peace she so desperately needs. In two days she read the entire Book of Mormon in english. Now she is reading it again, this time in her native Armenian. She continues to pray, searching for the answer. She has now had the first 3 lessons. We have only been meeting with her for 3 weeks, but I can visualize her in white entering the steps to the baptismal font. I can visualize her future, a future in which she escapes the darkness and contention of her past home life and starts for herself and new family and the peaceful life she craves.

Saturday we baptized a little girl named Hilary. She is only 8 years old, so she is not a convert baptism, but we have been teaching her because her family is not active in Church. My companion got to confirm her. It was wonderful to see her and her mom in Church yesterday and I pray that this baptism will be the push their family needs.

I want to bear witness to the world that God lives. He lives! And as I see Him work miracles in the lives of perishing souls I come closer to knowing Him and to realizing His Salvation. He is intimately involved in our lives, and if we will hear and answer His constant call for us we can find that peace that each of us so desperately seek.

    Sincerely,
    Elder Embree

  • From a study journal entry, January 17, 2006:
I have come to realize that the world, for the most part, has no concept of the true and living God.  They worship gods that I do not know.  For example, the Presbyterian Confession of Faith descibes a God that is "invisible, without body, parts, or passions . . . [and is] incomprehensible."  I know of no such deity.

The God I know is knowable.  "It is the first principle of the gospel to know . . . God" (Joseph Smith).  The God that I know is visible.  Prophets have seen Him throughout time, and I long for the time when I will see Him face to face.  The God that I know has body parts.  He has arms with which to hug me.  He has a mouth through which He speaks.  Perhaps more important, the God I know has passions.  He has emotion.  He weeps when He sees us suffer.  He smiles when He sees our triumphs.  I will even say that I have felt His sense of humor.  This is God.

I testify that God lives.  Literally, He lives.  He breathes.  He thinks.  He communicates.  Allbeit He is eternal, immortal, and perfect, but He is eternally, immortally, and perfectly alive.  He sent His living Son, who is in His express image, to Earth that we might know of Him.  And that Son did not come out of the Garden Tomb only to be killed by the creed of man which describes Him in such infinately dead terms.  He came out to live, and to show man that he too may live.

The prophets forsaw the day when the living God would not be worshiped.  Moses wrote, "the Lord shall scatter [Israel] among the nations . . . And there [they] shall serve gods . . . which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell" (Deuteronomy 4:27-28).  Constantly the Apostles centuries later were correcting and reproving the Church for false doctrines- false concepts of deity.  To the saints of Corinth who were doubting the literal resurrection, Paul wrote of the hundreds of perople who saw the Risen Lord.  "And last of all," Paul writes, "He was seen of me as one born out of due time" (1 Corinthians 15:8).  And yet despite such marvelous testimony, so many are caught up worshiping "the unknown God" (Acts 17:23).

We need to remember that we are literally the spirit children of God.  We were created in His image.  "Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to thing that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device" (Acts 17:29).  As far as men worship an unknown being defined by the creeds of men, they are worshiping "man's device."

There is a true, literally living God.  Of Him I bear solemn witness.  Of Him and His compassionate character the Prophet Joseph Smith said, "Our Heavenly Father is more liberal in His views, and boundless in His mercies and blessings that we are ready to believe or recieve. . . God does not look on sin with allowance, but . . . the nearer we get to our Heavenly Father, the more we are disposed to look with compassion on perishing souls; we feel that we want to take them upon our shoulders, and cast their sins behind our backs."

I testify of a God who has such shoulders.  Literally, He has shoulders.  And He loves us, and wants us each to find happiness.  He can and will carry our burdens and lift us up with His infinate compassion.  That He has done so for me is my testimony in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

  • Attention Residents of California:
It is now time to remove all Christmas lights from their decorative holiday location. Please comply immediately because it is tacky to still have them lit.

Greetings still from Sunland/Tajunga. Today is the start of my fourth transfer, my second in this area and with the same companion, Elder Whittier. I am excited because the work has really been picking up here. My companion and I have decided to start being successful, and I suppose that's all it took. We were tired of not being successful, so we just started acting as if we were successful, and bang- success.

These past two weeks have shown us to be bold and powerful. Our lessons are more spiritual. We resolved concerns and helped our principle investigator to commit to Church attendance. We taught a powerful lesson to a potential investigator and are now teaching her and her husband as new investigators. During the lesson she couldn't contain her happiness- and she told us so. We explained the Holy Spirit to her, and she told us that she felt that Spirit of God as we taught and prayed. She couldn't wait to watch with her husband the Restoration Video we left with her. Just last night we discovered that a less active couple we had been teaching the lessons to had quit smoking on the 4th. So far they've been successful and are thrilled by the resulting outpouring of the Spirit. We have been leaning on the inspirations of the Spirit more. We are more in tune to its subtleties and more prone to follow its promptings. In our knocking we have been happier, more enthusiastic, and bolder. We are getting more people who ask us to come back and teach more. The ward members in this area trust us more. They complement us for the testimonies we bore. (One asked me for my parents' address so he could write them). They are asking us to visit people they know. The more we work together with them, the better our work becomes.

I am thrilled about these changes. When I first came to this area, all I could focus on were the weaknesses of this ward/area. Now all I can focus on are the strengths and the potential that is here. I testify that the Spirit of the Lord leads and guides this work. There is simply no other way we could accomplish what we are accomplishing. I testify of Him, of Our Savior Jesus Christ, and of Our Father in Heaven. I proclaim without equivocation their prophet Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon he translated. I testify of Gordon B. Hinckley, the living prophet today. This I do in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

  • From a letter dated 12/26/05:

Dear Friends, Family, and fellow Xangans,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I had a great Christmas. It was so nice to talk to my family. I really miss them. Christmas Eve was certainly full of adventures. We played Santa with the "Hermanas" and helped deliver gifts and food to less fortunate members of the Spanish ward. It was very rewarding to see the reactions of the children. It made me a little bit of a better person.

We came home and my companion accidently stabbed himself in the pad of his thumb with a knife trying to open his Christmas gifts early. Blood gushed out everywhere- over gifts, sink, and dishes. I tried to convince him to go to the ER, but he would not. In morning he decided he should have gotten stitches, but he thought it too late. I got to brush up on my first aid skills, lol. Butterfly bandages and lots of gauze let me tell you.

I hope that on Friday you all got to enjoy the Joseph Smith 200th Birthday Commemoration. I want you to know that I have learned for myself that Joseph Smith was a prophet who talked with God face to face. What a remarkable thing. From Joseph Smith we get an ancient record with teachings that bless us in our day. It is the Book of Mormon and I am so grateful for it. Just today I was reading in Moroni 6:10 and was touched by a concept I'd like to share (you can follow along with the online Book of Mormon at http://www.scriptures.lds.org).

"Relying on the Merits of Jesus Christ, the Author and Finisher of Our Faith":

As the missionary Aaron taught, "since man had fallen he could not merit anything of himself" (Alma 22:14). Too many people think that the Latter-day Saints believe that we can save ourselves by our own good works, or merits. This is simply not the case. As the Book of Mormon clearly demonstrates we cannot of our own righteousness earn salvation. No amount of personal righteousness can save anyone because all fall short of the glory of God. This is, however, the beauty of the Atoning Sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We can overcome our own short comings because of HIS merits- HIS good works.

This is a remarkable thought worth pondering. I mean, "How great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presense of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah" (2 Nephi 2:8). "And if ye believe on his name[, Jesus Christ,] ye will repent of all your sins, that thereby ye may have a remission of them through his merits" (Helaman 14:13).

Repentence is wonderful, but it works not by our own actions, but by the actions of our Savior. Please do not think that this concept undermines personal responsibility. Yes, we are saved by the grace of Jesus Christ regaurdless of our falling short, but this is the very reason we need to repent and make sure our merits are good.- Not because we want to "earn" our way to heaven, but because we are so much more indebted to our God for that grace. And though we will never repay that debt, we must not turn away from He who has paided that debt. We must go about following His example, doing those things that He has asked us to do.

Read Moroni chapter 6. It really conveys this beautifully. And for more reference, read Helaman 14:12-13; 2 Nephi 31:19, Alma 22:14 and 24:10. I promise you will be blessed as you put these principles into action in your lives.

Take care, until next week, Elder Embree
