  • “What’s a dad for, dad? Tell me why I’m here, dad. Whisper in my ear that I’m growing up to be a better man, dad. Everything is fine, dad. Proud that you are mine, dad, cause I know I’m growing up to be a better man. . .”

I long for the days of Lucille Ball, before feminism had ruined society.

I just can’t stand the way fathers are portrayed on TV today. They always the stupid bumbling idiots who don’t deserve the smart women they are married too. I mean seriously, Homer Simpson (the simpsons), Hal (malcolm in the middle), Ray (everybody loves raymond), Peter Griffon (family guy), etc. It’s pathetic. There is all this pressure for guys to be stupid and for girls to be smart. That’s just not right. That’s a terrible burden for both men and women. Men are always having to be all apologetic and inferior, and women are always having to be right. They should allow themselves to be wrong sometimes, and we should be stronger role models.

What happened to the Lucy Show where it was just as funny to see a bumbling wife? I mean everybody loved Lucy, but she was allowed to be stupid and Ricky Ricardo was allowed to be smart. Or better yet, what happened to Bill Cosby? He was allowed to be a good father and a smart man, but Mrs. Huxtable was every bit as good and as smart as her husband. They were equal, and guess what, they were still funny. Now feminism has gone too far and shifted the scales beyond equality to the point were males are inferior to the female ego.

. . . Did the best you could, dad. Always understood, dad. Tell me I was right, dad. Opened up my eyes, dad. Proud to call you my dad. Thank you for my life, dad. (Yellowcard).

  • Although I don’t love the show, there’s also the 7th Heaven parents.

  • Wow.. I never really thought about that. But, it’s totally true. Good point.

  • I loved the cosby’s! Interesting thing though – most of those shows the women are stay at home moms. sort of a flip on feminism. I miss men in media being good role models and people to look up to also.

  • I do not see feminism as a burden on society. Feminism brought around womens sufferage and equality of sexes. I believe that the shows that you listed are showing the men what it was like to be a women, always wrong and having to do what the are told. I also believe that if you believe it so strongly then you should do something about it. Just like I believe that I Love Lucy is an abomination to women, I will not watch a single bit of it. Yes, when I did watch it I thought it was funny, but then I saw what it was doing to women and decided that it wasn’t worth it, I was going to be better than that. Katie

  • I don’t think we need to be “showing the men what it was like to be a woman.” Should we enslave whites to show them what it was like to be black 200 years ago? No! This is a common thought process today that is essentially over-correcting previous mistakes. We should not punish one group of people because another group was previously unjustly disadvantaged. Can’t we allow both groups to be treated well?

Lucille Ball is a well respected woman for what she did to advance the cause of women’s rights and feminism in the work place. I admire her for the movement she was a part of because in her day feminism was a great movement. I don’t see how someone who proved that women had a place in the business, comedy, and showbiz world for the first time is an abomination, so I’m not sure why you have boycotted the show.

I didn’t mean to completely rip on historic feminism, I simply meant to gripe about the lack of good fatherly role models on TV and the increasing amount of disrespect shown towards manhood.

  • I know exactly what you mean. I don’t even watch TV at all. Period. It disgusts me. I think feminism is good and bad. I think that it is good that women have the right to vote and to make important decisions and all that stuff, but I agree it has gone too far. People say things are fair between men and women, and I disagree. If things were fair, there wouldn’t be quotas. Everyone would be judged by the same standard. But, this world isn’t perfect. I am so greatful for the women who fought for us, but I don’t like how things are portrayed now. I know that both of my parents are smart, just in differnt ways. Media has twisted things horribly.

  • I didn’t mean my previous post as I didn’t respect Lucille Ball for her efforts in the feminism efforts. I know that she had a big part in her day. I meant that I don’t watch the show because of the way it portrays women. I also didn’t mean that it exactly shows what women were doing. Everyone should have the right to be as you said stupid and smart. These shows have just shown how far women have succeeded in education and not being inferior to men. Yes, some of the shows mentioned go to the exteme but pushing the limit is how things get done, in most cases. Sorry if I seemed too harsh in my previous statement. Katie
