  • Because there was a virus that infected my xanga site, I started moving everything to a secondary site as back up (this took up 430 pages on appleworks, and about 400 page views, which is 347 min of my day- but I wanted to be sure that I had a permenant copy of my journal). In so doing I came across these comments. For those of you who know Heather and Andy, I hope this will make you laugh for as long as it made me laugh. (oh, and I edited Saturday's entry in case you couldn't see it cause of the virus. Also, if you left a comment, it may not be there because of the virus)

  • I promise when I find some time I will tell you about homecoming- the amazingly awesome dinner at the belltower, the ballroom dance, charade, and the football game which we won!

Meanwhile I am preparing my lesson for Sunday School tomorrow.

Edit: (note: a protected entry will supliment this post eventually)

Alright, I am finding time now to tell you about my really cool weekend.

On thursday I went to La Quinta inn with some guys with my floor. We played tag all over the hotel with the high school kids visiting there for "y-weekend." Then we went swimming. It was all fun and everything, but I discovered a big difference between high school and college. I didn't realize the difference was that big.

Friday I spent the whole day in anticipation homecoming, which was really fun. There ended up being 10 couples who we went with- mostly in our ward. All the guys were on my floor.

That day we scowered BYU campus for the perfect place to have dinner. After trying several places and failing, Sean suggested the belltower. So we went to the day rooms and stole 3 round tables and a few rectangle tables. Then we found some chairs in the basement storage area, and we moved them all to the platform around the belltower. We set them up with table clothes and everything- boy was it hot. For those of you unfamiliar with the belltower, here is a picture:
(it's the tower in the foreground)
notice the balcony at the base of the tower that has a nice view- that's where we set the tables up- and when it's all lit up it is very beautiful and romantic.

Anyway, Gordy and I picked up panda express and martinelli's and then at 7:30 we picked up the girls. (after their RA Kristin interviewed us). Man were they good looking- my date, Lisa, especially.

We hadn't told them where we were going, so we just walked over to the belltower, and it was so much fun. The bells rang at like the perfect time . . . it was great. Oh, and Panda Express forgot to give us cups . . . so we drank the bubbly straight from the bottle. We looked like drunks- it was funny. "Take a sip and pass it" (of grape juice and cider!)

So then we walked to the ball room dance at the wilk. It was way cool because they had a live band and a chocolate fountain!!!! The chocolate fountain was way cool!!!!! I want to get one for our day room. Nothing like fondue strawberries and bananas and pretzels. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

So Lisa and I became pros at the fox trot and the cha cha. I love BYU dances- this one was all "couple" songs cause everything was played by the band. And it was great cause everybody actually knew how to dance- at least somewhat. The trick is in the posture. All in the posture. Oh, and everyone looked so good. I've never seen so many different modest dresses in one place. It was crazy hot.

Anyway, after the dance we went and played charade, which was funny. The best one was when Rodney and Britney acted out spiderman. Rodney got up on this ledge and leaned his head back so that it was like he was upside down. Then he motioned an unsuspecting Britney over. We guessed it right away.

Then we went home and changed. The guys cleaned up the bell tower, and then we talked outside for a while and watched shooting stars.

So that was homecoming. It was way fun. Then Saturday I slept for like 13 hours or something crazy like that. Seriously. And then I went to the football game. I ended up sitting with Elizabeth from home- boy was it fun to run into her and catch up. And despite a boring game, we won!!! yAy!

Alright, with that I think I need a nap.

  • I want to live on an island in the Aegean sea in 1500 BC. I want to live on Thera. We just studied ancient Aegean cultures in Art History, and I found something about Minoan art that attracted me- something about the way it portrayed their lifestyle. (and I was surprised because Greek art has always made me think that they were hedonist pigs- Minoan art is very different from Greek art) I want to be a Minoan fresco painter.

Now for those of you who know anything about the Minoans and about my personality, you would know that there is some major conlfict there. My teacher called them the hippies of the ancient world. Perhaps if I studied them in more depth, I would be repulsed, but as of now, they have shockingly won me over.

What I liked so much about these frescos is how graceful and hopeful they are. This was a part of the world that was both tragic and beautiful. You have earthquakes, volcanos, tidal waves, famine, etc, but at the same time you have a sea so clean you can sea the bottom- you have beatiful mountain island paradises. Which did they dwell on? The beautiful. The simple. The optimistic. (I notice a similar thing in Polynesiac culture . . . those island people have so much faith and optimism)

Minoan art is very hopeful. It portrays calm domestic scenes and nature. They created the first landscape (it looks like it inspired Dr. Suess). It is just so quaint and peaceful. The way they painted their life was so real it made me want to be part of it. I suppose that is the power of art, because one would think that I would be repulsed by a people who were so protective of nature, who glorified the human body, who were so peaceful they didn't even prepare for war, etc, etc. I mean come on, these are liberal things! Maybe it was even this "hippie" culture that created the foundation for later Greek hedonist and their obsession with the glorification of man.

    Maybe I am changing.

(sorry for the lecture in history)

  • If my understanding of the girl network is correct, then S Hall has now discovered this site. Now I will have to be much more careful about what I write I'm just kiddding (actually I did almost go make some entries protected, but decided it'd be ok)

So what a wierd weekend. Friday night was the football game. Mostly sad, except that I got my picture taken with Cosmo!! How hot is that!! And guess who sat behind me? Carly Elton!!! I haven't seen her in 3 years or something crazy like that. But I had a lot of fun at the game despite the fact that the game was boring and sad. My cousin ditched me so I sat with everyone in my ward and it was so much fun. Late that night (er, morning) a bunch of us guys got together and played a game, but I won't tell you what game, you will have to ask Lisa . . . maybe she'll tell you

Saturday was wierd. I had a hot date but it got canceled cause Bert got in the hospital (no, Bert was not my date, it was a group date that he planned). So instead I studied and then Lisa, Rachel, Ryan, James, Judi, Kali, others, and I went to the bonfire. And since Bert's girl freaked out and made him leave, taking the speakers with him, we had no music. And since there was no music, it became lame despite there being lots of cool people, so we left and went and hung out and it was wierd. But apparently we missed the naked man and the police break up at the bonfire.

I love Utah. Only in Utah could such a bonfire happen in such a way . . . I intended to ellaborate, but if I don't write this Nathan the Wise paper, I'm going to be in trouble.

Wow, it's been 562 days since I joined Xanga. So with that I sign out.

  • Meghan today described me as giddy.

Last night I had so many things to do from Composition I lost perhaps too much sleep, although I have had less sleep before. Lack of transportation and scheduling convience caused me to not go to the Taking Back Sunday/Fall Out Boy/Matchbook Romance concert last night. I'll have to ask Jeff about it.

Instead of going to the concert, I snuck into Lisa's room. (During Visiting Hours). I had Rachael get Lisa out of her room, while leaving the door slightly ajar. Then Britney, Cali, and a bunch of other girls stood watch while I painted Lisa's window with a picture of me and a picture of her. I then wrote "will you go to homecoming with me?" on it. It was pretty cool. I might be able to get a picture up here . . . maybe.

So then I went back to my dorm and ran into Lisa, and talked for a while (before she saw her window). Then she went back, and like a half hour later I looked out the window and there were eight girls each holding up a sign that spelled out "heck yes!" I kept the "!" sign.

And thus she said "heck yes." And thus I got no sleep. And thus I became giddy.

  • Brief moment of nastolgia . . . my dad put old embarassing pictures of me on the family website. I wish I was 14 again. Aren't I so cute?:

  • I love General Conference. I love it because right now I am listening to Apostles, Prophets, and general authorities. Right now. Live Revelation from God.

I just wanted to encourage you to listen to General Conference. Jeffry R. Holland has allready given a beautiful talk. Also two new Apostles have been called to fill vacancies in the quorum. They are:

Dieter F. Uchtdorf (He grew up in Germany, as far as I know he may be the first Apostle in this dispensation with English as a second language)

David A. Bednar (Former President of BYU-Idaho- he is very young)

So start watching General Conference now and be enlightened: www.lds.org

Edit: I love how the Prophets show you a way to live in their talks that is so appealing. They show you what it is to be truly happy and then invite you to live that way and be happy like that. I love it.
